The mighty Sepik flows from the mountains close to the border with Irian Jaya and winds through swamplands and thick jungle, staining the ocean with its silt.Over the millennia every stone has been washed out to sea, leaving wood as the only building material and shells the hardest substance available. Navigable through much of its 1,126 kilometre length, this river reaches deep into a remote world where dugout canoes are the main form of transport and remote communities survive on a diet of smoked fish and sago.
