Introduction:
Rila is a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria and the highest mountain range of Bulgaria and the Balkans, with its highest peak being Musala at 2,925 m. The massif is also the sixth highest mountain in Europe (when each mountain is represented by its highest peak only), coming after the Caucasus, the Alps, Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees and Mount Etna, and the highest between the Alps and the Caucasus.
Hiking routes:
Two major European long distance hiking routes – E4 and E8, pass through the territory of Rila Mountains. There are about 20 working huts and 5 refuges where you can overnight and order basic food. Some of them are heavily booked with groups in summer and you should always consider securing a place in advance for peace of mind.
Where to stay?:
There are few options to stay overnight in a different types of places if you are hiking or trekking in the mountains of Bulgaria:
- Using the mountain huts network;
- Staying in a guest houses and small hotels in the lower mountain areas and in the villages around;
- Camping;
- Combination of these types of lodging.
