Getting there:
Introduction:
Remote and quiet, Makalawena Beach is stunning, one of the most naturally pretty Hawaii beaches. Hidden off the beaten path along the Kohala coast, you can't drive to it, which makes it all the more rewarding.
Hiking:
If you are looking for great hiking in Hawaii and can manage a bit of a walk across the lava, we highly recommend this moderate hike. The reward is one of the most picturesque and pristine beaches anywhere on the Big Island.
Getting there:
To get to Makalawena Beach, you have two options. The easiest is to drive to Kekaha Kai Beach and from there to walk North and approach Makalawena Beach from the South. Start out on Highway 19 and turn towards the ocean between mile markers 90 and 91. You will see a sign for Kekaha Kai Sate Park. This road is mostly unpaved, but just about any car can handle it. Just take your time.
